Draft Verge Garden Guidelines

Closing date for submissions: Sunday 28 July 2024, 4.30pm

Council welcomes comments from the community on the Draft Verge Garden Guidelines.

The Draft Verge Garden Guidelines (the guidelines) were developed to allow Eurobodalla residents to participate in urban greening by creating a successful and safe verge garden without requiring further permission from Council. The verge is the nature strip or the Council-owned land between a property boundary and the road.

Verge gardens create greener spaces, which improve our streets’ amenity. They also provide:

  • access to outdoor recreation
  • social and health benefits through improved mental wellbeing
  • natural cooling through shading and sun protection
  • habitat for our local wildlife,
    and
  • remove carbon from the atmosphere helping to reduce emissions.

The guidelines were developed with input from various Council stakeholders and information gathered from a verge garden planting trial which we carried out in Broulee.

Conditions are included in the guidelines that need to be followed to ensure your garden does not impact on the safety of the community, surrounding infrastructure and the environment.

Residents should wait until the public exhibition period is complete, and a final version of the guidelines is endorsed by Council before starting work on your garden.
