We wish to advise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people that this exhibition contains images and names of deceased persons.

Painting on Country features works by five senior artists from the Tjungu Palya art centre in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands of South Australia. The artists have reinvigorated their ancestors’ practice of painting directly onto the land.

Their work, captured in a series of large-format photographs, is both timeless and transient, bridging the ancient and the contemporary.

These images were made during September 2016 around the remote Indigenous communities of Nyapari, Kanpi, Watarru and Cave Hill (Walinynga).

Painting on Country was previously on show at the National Museum of Australia 14 March to 10 November 2019.
