Borang Creek bridge
Project: Building a bridge over Borang Creek on Potato Point Road, Bodalla
Timeframe: May to December 2025
Status: Preparing
Cost and funding:
- $1m through the Australian Government’s Disaster Ready Fund
- Council contribution
Page last updated: August 2024
Project details
We are working to:
- build a bridge over Borang Creek
- realign the road to connect to the bridge
- remove the old culvert
Benefits to the community:
- improved reliability of access to Potato Point
- maintained essential services during heavy rainfall
- reduced environmental impacts and road maintenance needs
- improved access to the Bodalla Sewage Treatment Plant
Potato Point Road provides the only vehicle access to Potato Point, so when the road becomes impassable, the village is effectively cut off. Currently, where the road crosses Borang Creek, just 1km east of Bodalla, flooding during heavy rainfall frequently leads to road closures, significantly impacting the local community.
To reduce the likelihood of these closures, we plan to replace the low-lying culvert at Borang Creek with a bridge less susceptible to flooding.
The new two-lane concrete bridge will be 1m higher, allowing water to flow more freely beneath the road, thereby reducing environmental damage and requiring less maintenance.
It will be built alongside the current road to allow continued access during construction. Once the bridge is in place, we will realign the road to lead directly onto the bridge.
This upgrade will improve access reliability for residents, school buses, visitors, and essential services. It will also ensure consistent access to the Bodalla Sewage Treatment Plant during extreme weather events, enabling continued service and reducing the risk of effluent contamination.
Overall, this project is a solid investment in disaster prevention, ensuring that Potato Point Road remains a reliable route both in and out of the village.
