Council's reply
The Divisional Manager Waste Services spoke with the presenter, following the meeting.
Mr Frantz was advised on several free Council initiatives that focus on the recovery and diversion of waste from landfill, including our free worm farm and composting workshops, Community Recycling Centre which accepts household problem waste such as paint, smoke detectors, batteries, e-waste, aerosols, light globes, gas bottles, and fire extinguishers, the annual chemical cleanout which accepts cleaners, poisons, chemicals, and pesticides, and drumMUSTER which accepts metal or plastic containers up to 205 litres. Additionally, the annual hardwaste collection is a free kerbside pickup service for residential properties to dispose of up to two cubic metres of bulky waste. Council separates recoverable material during collection (e.g. whitegoods (fridges, freezers, and air conditioners), other metal items) to divert them from landfill. Council also recovers pre-loved items in good condition for resale through our Buy Back Shops at each of our waste facilities.
Furthermore, Council regularly educates the community about resource recovery and recycling through the media and on our website, including where and how to dispose of items correctly, including waste items that can be accepted at our waste facilities for free. Mr Frantz was thankful for the insight and encouraged to contact the waste manager with any further questions or suggestions he may have regarding resource recovery and recycling.
