Moruya Airport redevelopment off to a flying start

Work is underway to progress Eurobodalla Council’s Moruya Airport redevelopment to the next stage.

Council is looking to maximise long-term viability of the airport by enabling more commercial activities that add value to the facility.

Subdivision was recently approved of more than three hectares of land to be privately leased for commercial activities at the eastern end of the precinct.

Council crews are now working to provide underground infrastructure to cater for the subdivision, including storm water, water, sewer, three-phase power and telecommunication connections, and constructing a connecting taxiway.

Parts of the subdivision area will be raised to meet flood zone development requirements, as will sections of Bruce Cameron Drive. Council will also seal the existing gravel entry road to service the new blocks of land.

Commencement comes after the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage last month granted an Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit for works to proceed.

Council’s Divisional Manager Property and Commercial Services Andrew Greenway said Council had been working with local land custodians and Local Aboriginal Land Councils to make sure cultural heritage values were respected.

“We acknowledge the Aboriginal community’s cultural connections to this area and we appreciate the learnings shared with us on the journey so far,” he said.

“We will continue to work with the Aboriginal community and this project will allow us to provide greater recognition of cultural connections to the area.”

Mr Greenway said the first lease of four lots had already been secured.

“This project is all about creating local jobs and ensuring long-term viability of the airport so it’s very pleasing to see,” he said.

“We’ve been getting great feedback about last year’s upgrade to the airport terminal, which is now bigger and includes a café, new and increased seating and an accessible toilet.

“Rex’s investment in providing a dedicated Moruya-Sydney route with reduced fares and our growing passenger numbers indicate we’re on the right path.”

The Moruya Airport upgrade is thanks to funding of $7.1 million from the NSW and Australian Governments to which Council is contributing $2.5 million.
