Living in Eurobodalla: What's happening in waste

Published: 23 July 2024

Here’s an update on what’s new and what’s returning in the waste world of Council.

Soft plastic and textile recycling

Textile recycling is now all-year round! The exciting news comes after trialling a linen collection day last year. The community brought in sheet-loads to be recycled and gave it a big thumbs up. So now you can drop-off your textile materials such as clothes, shoes, home textiles, soft toys, textile accessories and underwear for free at all three waste facilities. The textile waste bins are next to the soft plastic recycling bins. Yes! You read correct … now it’s time to trial soft plastics recycling. Council has partnered with Recycle Smart to deliver soft plastics drop off points at all three of our waste facilities. Drop your stash to a waste facility free of charge.

Vouchers for remote residents

Remote residents with no bin collection service will receive three tip vouchers to use in the new financial year. Keep an eye on your mailbox for more information soon.

Free green waste

We are teaming up with the Rural Fire Service ahead of the bushfire season again this September. Winter is a great time to get busy in the backyard, clear gutters, and trim hedges in time for the free green waste drop off over two weeks in September.

Worms and compost

Everyone’s favourite workshops are on again in September. Learn the basics of worm farming and composting and take home a free kit to get started. Call our waste team to book. For dates and locations, visit our worm farming and home composting web page.

Litter bugs beware

Fines have doubled for illegal dumping and littering. It’s the first crackdown in decades by the NSW Government, now tightening restrictions to protect the environment and our health. This means if you toss trash out of the car window, you could cop a $500 fine. For dumping in the bush fines are much greater – tens of thousands of dollars. Council rangers have authority to issue fines and carry out investigations while the Environment Protection Authority oversees enforcement.

Don't bin your batteries

You may have seen a splash of colour on the waste trucks lately. The large mural stickers are a reminder to residents that batteries don’t go in the bin. We saw three fires in waste trucks and at the recycling facility last year. We’re working alongside other councils in our region to get the message out that batteries can be deadly if not disposed of properly.

Batteries can be recycled. Take them to a waste facility, Council’s main administration building, a library or even some supermarkets and retail businesses accept batteries too.
