Learn your weeds... and save the Warty Zieria

Tilba, Gulaga and Najanuga in Eurobodalla’s south are the only places in Australia where endangered plant Warty Zieria still grows.

With just 3,000 plants remaining and invasive weeds like lantana threatening to get the upper hand, Eurobodalla Council is on a mission to save the species and this week residents have an opportunity to help.

A community weeding session will take place on Wednesday 13 July from 10.30am to 12.30pm where interested residents can learn to identify the endangered plant and how to control the weeds that threaten it.

The session will be held around the water tower at Central Tilba, a Warty Zieria stronghold.

Most of the 3,000 remaining plants are on private land, however, and Council is encouraging landholders around Tilba to come along and be part of the solution.

“We’ll show attendees how to use the battery-operated spray packs available to borrow from Council for controlling invasive weeds,” says environment officer Tom Gear, who will lead Wednesday’s session alongside Landcare coordinator Emma Patyus.

“Bring along any weeds you’d like identified, and we’ll give you some free native plants in return and show you how to plant them for best results,” Tom said.

Meet at 10.30am in the carpark at the end of Station Street, Central Tilba, behind the pub.

Bring your own sunblock and hat, sturdy shoes, and a water bottle. Gloves, tools, protective equipment and lunch supplied.
